The love story from which the film ‘Ali and Awrala’ is developed is the brainchild of Abdimalik A. Isak, an established Somali journalist in Europe who runs an informative TV station called SOMTV. For the film Mr. Abdimalik not only wrote the script but also carried out most of the preparatory tasks, which were necessary for the filming process.
For the film to conform to the setting and the plot of its scripts, and for it to convey the true themic pictures of the society and the country it was intended for, the Author initial plan was to film it in Somalia. But this was not possible mainly for one obvious reason- the insecurity that had reigned over Somalia. Furthermo
re the eyesore ruin and destruction, which the country had suffered in the decade or so of the civil war has ruled out the possibility of finding there, the sceneries required for the film. Option sealed off, it therefore, became necessary to find another place-a place of close resemblance to Somalia. It was this that compelled the script writer, who is also the director of the film to embark on a venue finding mission on September 2005, he journey many E.African countries and eventually settled for the Kenyan Coastal town of Mombasa. Besides for its close resemblance to Mogadishu, Mombassa was chosen for its enthralling sceneries.
The shooting activities
The first week of April 2006, a crew of twenty-five young men and woman arrived at the chosen venue. Armed with the necessary equipment for the film, they settled at two stores building at the shore of the great Indian
Ocean. Comprising of actors, actresses, cameramen, technicians and musicians, the team set off the work immediately.
